If you’re a web designer, graphics designer or in the creative industry, you will be able to relate to this post!

Made up of 90% Starbuck
Oh yes, we all love a bit / a lot of coffee! Keeps the might focused and the creative juices flowing.

Bleed Pantone 19-1664
All graphics designer live by the Pantone colours. A range of colour standards used in all creative industries.

What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is used as “dummy text” to fill blank space on a page before the proper content is ready. This helps with designing web page layouts.

Colour for Print – CMYK
CMYK Stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black tone). Which is a four colour process used for printing.

BIG NO NO!
Rule of thumb… A font should NEVER be stretched! Makes the font hard to read.

The Fear of Comic Sans
A professional designer will understand why this font is not professional and how much it is hated in the industry!

Love for White Space!
A blank canvas, some white space is fantastic for a designer to get creative.

Google Standards!

Responsive web design (RWD) is a setup where the server always sends the same HTML code to all devices and CSS is used to alter the rendering of the page on the device. Google’s algorithms should be able to automatically detect this setup if all Googlebot user agents are allowed to crawl the page and its assets (CSS, JavaScript, and images).

What does this mean?
For those of you who are not familiar with these web terms, you are probably wondering what this means! The usage of smartphones and tablet devices used to surf the web is ever growing. Ensuring your website is optimised to work on all devices is a MUST.

Responsive Design
Responsive websites allow for easy navigation as well as easy reading. Without resizing, panning and scrolling the device.
There is a huge number of various screen sizes from smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and even HDTVs. It is critical that your site can adjust to any screen size making it easy for the user to navigate around the website efficiently.

Is your website optimised effectively for all devices and platforms? Don’t just think about mobile or desktop, think about every single device size a user on the web could use. Responsive websites are designed to provide the best viewing experience across all platforms.

dimplem-responsive-design21

How Does It Work?
Responsive design allows the same website to adapt to the target device’s screen size without compromising the aesthetics and functionality. This is done by special code parameters within the CSS code that dynamically adjust elements on the web page depending on the size of the browser window (this will usually be the same size of the screen). This coding is very important because it needs to have been written from the ground up with responsive elements in mind.

Older websites that haven’t been written with responsiveness in mind, will be a lot more cumbersome to convert over to a responsive design that will be reliable and consistent across devices.

#NationalFreelancersDay

This blog is personal to me. I have absolutely enjoyed being a freelancer and working with some fantastic clients! Varying between different industry fields I have used my creative skills to enhance many businesses and also gained a great insight into how others work.

I just wanted to share 5 basic freelance principles on how to manage being a freelancer, whether you are considering diving into this field of work or already are a freelancer; if so I am sure you can relate to these points.

Nationalfreelancerday

5 Basic Freelance Principles

Early Morning Start

It is very important to ensure you are up and on the go and reachable early morning! Businesses usually work from 9am so get a head start and fit in some morning exercise.

Plan Your Day

Make a simple check list, set yourself a daily goal and stick to it. Stay organised and tidy up each night. Make your work space ideal for you; I like to work downstairs with the patio door wide open – get in some air and soak up some sun (depending on the UK weather).

“Me” Time

Shut down on time, don’t overwork the allocated hours. Give yourself regular breaks. Don’t sit all day. Get moving during lunch!

Stay Focused

It’s hard to keep your eyes off social media and WhatsApp! But stay focused and reward yourself with these luxuries once you have completed your daily tasks.  Maybe a spot of shopping or a cheeky Starbucks won’t hurt now and again.

Tools You Need

Most importantly make sure your tools are all updated so you can work efficiently and produce outstanding results. Update your desktop / laptop. Ensure you have the latest version of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and other software. Read forums and articles on the latest technologies – keep in tune with the industry!

24 Hour Business

Could you imagine if Google.com only worked Monday to Friday, 9am till 5pm? - Crazy right?!

How else can you keep making sales while your retail store is closed! The greatest benefit of an online presence is that it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. When your store is closed, your sales are still increasing! Let the internet do the work for you! We don’t live in a Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm era anymore. Saturdays and Sundays are now considered ‘working days’(in the UK). The web has changed everything – people shop at any time of the day (or night), across a variety of technology devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) and in line with this, expectations have also changed. Amazon has followed suit by offering Saturday and Sunday delivery for well over a year now (including on Bank Holidays). Courier companies are obliging. Warehouses are staffed 7 days a week and we have never seen so much robotic automation within them. Times have changed. And the bottom line is, if you don’t change the way you do business, you won’t survive. You can see proof of this on the high street, as many old and established names that we thought would be around forever have disappeared one by one whereas anybody with widespread internet presence has done nothing but thrive and grow.

Take your business to the next level

Building an e-commerce website is a great investment for future development. There are many inexpensive ways to create a site which doesn't require a huge investment. Fully-fledged corporate business sites with the added e-commerce features can help promote your store as well as boost the extra sales! You don’t even require a storefront and ask any store owner, having a storefront is a tremendous overhead.

Take your business online now. If you require help in getting started please feel free to get in touch with me. Alternatively click here for your FREE WEBSITE QUOTATION.

Why You Should Hire A Professional Freelancer!

Whether you are thinking about starting a new venture or you have a vision of taking your current business to new levels, the decision of choosing a freelancer or an agency can be very difficult. Both have their pros and cons. During the course of time I, myself, have deliberated which route is best for me as a person. The question is… would you choose to go with an expert organisation or a specialist with passion?

Firstly, you need to sit down and make a list of all the things that you require in your project. Do you require proficiency with a certain CMS such as WordPress? Do you require aggressive and ongoing SEO to find new customers, or is your website mainly for business presence? Do you require e-commerce? Do you need help with your business image/design? Do you need a logo? Do you need bespoke advanced features within your website? The list goes on! Once you have made a list of exactly what you require, and also have a budget in mind, you can decide whether a professional freelancer or an agency will be appropriate for your needs.

The Benefits of Hiring a Professional Freelancer :

Cost

This plays a big part in why choosing a freelancer is the way forward. Professional freelancers have fewer overheads than an agency would and therefore are not as costly. And the differences can be significant. Very significant. A project that an agency may charge upwards of several thousands of pounds, you could find a freelancer with the right skillset and experience that could complete the job at less than half that cost. Keep in mind however, that you can get what you pay for and outsourcing to more than one freelancer can quickly run up a large tab.

Flexibility

A freelancer has the flexibility to control the way in which they organise their workload. Therefore they are able to schedule around your priorities and needs. This includes working outside the normal working hours to meet your deadlines. Something that an agency may not accommodate without an increase in cost, if at all.

Expertise

Professional freelancers can most of the time be compared to consultants. The fields that they specialise in, you can be rest assured that they have spent the time and resources to be the best they can within that field. You generally won’t get this kind of tenacity from an employee of an agency. It’s just the nature of the role. You’d have to rely on the agency to manage their employees and deliver your targets, and if agencies have hired sub-standard employees, your project will suffer as a consequence in terms of time-scale and quality. With both freelancers and agencies, always check their portfolios and past clients so you can ensure that their standards meet your requirement.

And then we also have the large field of ‘creativity’. This is such a variable field – you may find that you like the look and style of the work from one freelancer/agency, and not from another. There are some very good freelancers around that have very artistic qualities – you seldom find these people working for agencies. They know their strengths and will be working for themselves on a freelance basis. If you require a lot of creative input, you will be better off searching for a freelancer. You will save on cost and potentially have something very special made for you that an agency may have not been able to do if they didn't have the creative talent in-house.

My previous clients have found that I offer the perfect balance between the experience of a professional agency, and the proficiency of an accomplished freelancer with a strong background in design. Learn more about what I can offer your business – read more about me.

How Social Media Can Help Your Business

Every platform is different to its own. For instance people use Twitter to see what's going on around the world. Facebook to keep up with their friends and loved ones. LinkedIn to communicate with professional individuals. Pinterest for inspiration and project planning, such as home décor. Then you have Instagram to share images and visual philosophies. There are so many possibilities waiting out there, but how does each one of these specifically help your business?

Twitter – The Micro-Blogger

A single tweet can contain text, photos, links and even videos. By connecting with your current customers, potential customers, associated brands and influencers Twitter enables you to interact and follow people outside of your network from around the world. This is a fantastic application / tool to start discussions with industry experts.  Use Twitter to post updates and the latest news about your company, products or services. Share a link to the full content of the updates and news.- contact me for more information about how use Twitter.

Instagram - The Visually Inspired

“A picture can speak a Thousand words” – I’m sure we have all heard this cliché before. Instagram is a visual storytelling application / tool, used by many to create conversation through imagery. The power of this can capture the attention of your audience by sharing their story, background and vision.

I must admit I am a bit of an addict when it comes to Instagram. By using this application on a regular basis I have raised my number of followers up to 2,000+ to date. The average ‘likes’ that I receive per post / image has increased by approximately 400%. Social media plays a great part when it comes to business growth. contact me for tips on how to increase your activities on Instagram.

Facebook – The Interactor

Facebook is a very interactive application with buttons for ‘likes’, ‘loves’ and also ‘laughs’. Furthermore you can share posts, reply with comments and carry out discussions with others. An endless application / tool which also allows you to invite people to events, post reminders such as birthdays and forthcoming events, as well as many more tools to help you represent your business in this modern era. Facebook has over 500 million users worldwide so is an obvious choice for networking and interacting with future clients around the world.

So, find what works for you and believe me, once you start snapping some good pictures, sharing, posting and tweeting, you won't stop! - Happy posting.
